A Test of the Collisional Dark Matter Hypothesis from Cluster Lensing

چکیده

Spergel & Steinhardt proposed the possibility that the dark matter particles are self-interacting, as a solution to two discrepancies between the predictions of cold dark matter models and the observations: first, the observed dark matter distribution in some dwarf galaxies has large, constant-density cores, as opposed to the predicted central cusps; and second, small satellites of normal galaxies are much less abundant than predicted. The dark matter self-interaction would produce isothermal cores in halos, and would also expel the dark matter particles from dwarfs orbiting within large halos. However, another inevitable consequence of the model is that halos should become spherical once most particles have interacted. Here, I rule out this model by the fact that the innermost regions of dark matter halos in massive clusters of galaxies are elliptical, as shown by gravitational lensing and other observations. The absence of collisions in the lensing cores of massive clusters implies that any dark matter self-interaction is too weak to have affected the observed density profiles in the dark-matter dominated dwarf galaxies, or to have eased the destruction of dwarf satellites in galactic halos. If sx is the cross section and mx the mass of the dark matter particle, then sx/mx < 10 −25.5 cm/GeV. Subject headings: galaxies: formation large-scale structure

Constraints on the Collisional Nature of the Dark Matter from Gravitational Lensing in the Cluster A2218

The detailed distribution of mass within clusters of galaxies can be used to probe the nature of dark matter. We show that constraints on the extent of the mass distribution around galaxies in the rich cluster A 2218 obtained from combining strong and weak lensing observations are consistent with the predictions which assume that the dominant mass component (dark matter) in these halos is colli...

Constraining the Collisional Nature of the Dark Matter Through Observations of Gravitational Wakes

We propose to use gravitational wakes as a direct observational probe of the collisional nature of the dark matter. We calculate analytically the structure of a wake generated by the motion of a galaxy in the core of an X-ray cluster for dark matter in the highly-collisional and collisionless limits. We show that the difference between these limits can be recovered from detailed X-ray or weak l...

The Dark Matter Density Profile of the Lensing Cluster Ms2137-23: a Test of the Cold Dark Matter Paradigm

We present new spectroscopic observations of the gravitational arcs and the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in the cluster MS2137-23 (z = 0.313) obtained with the Echelle Spectrograph and Imager on the Keck II telescope. We find that the tangential and radial arcs arise from sources at almost identical redshifts (z = 1.501, 1.502). We combine the measured stellar velocity dispersion profile of t...

Observations of cluster substructure using weakly lensed sextupole moments

Since dark matter clusters and groups may have substructure, we have examined the sextupole content of Hubble images looking for a curvature signature in background galaxies that would arise from galaxy-galaxy lensing. We describe techniques for extracting and analyzing sextupole and higher weakly lensed moments. Indications of substructure, via spatial clumping of curved background galaxies, w...

The Distribution of Dark Matter over 3 Decades in Radius in the Lensing Cluster

We present a detailed analysis of the baryonic and dark matter distribution in the lensing cluster Abell 611 (z=0.288), with the goal of determining the dark matter profile over an unprecedented range of cluster-centric distance. By combining three complementary probes of the mass distribution, weak lensing from multi-color Subaru imaging, strong lensing constraints based on the identification ...
